Kuay Jap Wat Phra Maha That

A trip in the Khlong Krachaeng neighborhood concluded with a delicious meal at Kuay Jap Na Wat Mahathat, a little eatery favored by locals and travelers alike.

Its appeal lies not only in its wonderful flavor but also in its charming nostalgia. This shop began as a humble street vendor in Ton Chan Alley, where the owner diligently saved money to transform it into a diner within a commercial building, preserving its original charm for nearly 80 years. The pork belly and pork rind roasted over charcoal truly stand out; each piece is infused with aroma, the offal is fresh and free of any unpleasant smells, and the soup strikes a perfect balance. You can choose between thick or clear soup.

Wat Mahathat Worawihan

This historical temple is considered a precious treasure of Phetchaburi. Historians suggest that it was constructed during the Dvaravati period. For a considerable time, it stood deserted until the reign of King Rama VI, who undertook extensive renovations and elevated it to the status of a royal temple in 1916.

This temple stands out for its rich history, art, and archaeology, especially the iconic “5-spire prang,” a true landmark in Phetchaburi’s old city, which can be clearly seen from every perspective of the town. Within, one can find a relic of Lord Buddha. The covered walkway features 193 stunning Buddha images, predominantly crafted in the late Ayutthaya and Phetchaburi styles, each showcasing its own unique charm.

On the Khlong Krachaeng community side, you’ll find two interesting street art locations. The first one illustrates an impressive painting that illustrates the history of Phetchaburi, spanning from the Sukhothai period to the present by ‘Ziam Type’, a famous group of typeface designers.

The second site features a painting of Thailand’s beloved actor ‘Mitr Chaibancha’, who sadly passed away in 1970 while filming the final scene of Insee Thong, leaving behind a legacy of 266 acting works. What makes Mitr Chaibancha so special? It is because this extraordinary actor is Phetchaburi’s favorite son.

Sunthorn Phu Memorial Park

Sunthorn Phu Memorial Park is located on the waterfront behind Wat Phlap Phla Chai. This is believed to be the location where the celebrated poet once sailed, as indicated in his final poem, Nirat Mueang Phet.

The newly constructed ‘Phetchaburi River Bridge’ is adjacent to the park, and the Royal Property Market is located on the opposite side of the river. The design is inspired by the unique art style of Phetchaburi craftsmen. The purpose of this project is to promote tourism, protect the riverfront community’s lifestyle, and connect the people on both banks of the Phetchaburi River.

Wat Phlap Phla Chai was built in the late Ayutthaya period. Initially, the site served as a venue for military meetings and soldier training rather than functioning as a temple. A royal pavilion also graced the banks of the Phetchaburi River. The temple’s construction took into account the unique features of its location, leading to the name “Wat Phlap Phla Chai,” which helps people recall its historical importance.

The museum, nestled within the Phra Khanthararat Temple, stands out as one of the temple’s attractions. This collection showcases 32 ancient shadow puppets, crafted by ‘Luang Pho Rit,’ the abbot, along with his dedicated disciples, who are committed to keeping this captivating performing art alive in the hearts of all who visit.

Rabiang Rim Nam Restaurant

This traditional teak house has proudly stood for 120 years on the banks of the Phetchaburi River and was once the residence of an affluent family. Now transformed into a guesthouse and restaurant named “Rabiang Rim Nam,” it beautifully preserves its original architectural charm. During the backpacker boom, this location gained recognition in the famous guidebook Lonely Planet, turning it into a sought-after spot for international tourists.

It became popular again in 2010 when it served as a location for the film “A Little Thing Called Love,” leading to a steady influx of fans keen to visit. The restaurant offers an impressive selection of traditional Phetchaburi foods, featuring dishes like “Kaeng Kua Hua Plee” (spicy palm curry with ginger and chile) and “Keaw Whan Pla Krai” (green curry with snakehead fish), along with many other dishes. The restaurant also serves “Khanom Tan,” a local beloved dessert made by the owner herself.

Chom Klao Bridge

A historical bridge that King Rama IV commissioned during the construction of Khao Wang, also known as Phra Nakhon Khiri, serves as an important link for Phetchaburi residents commuting to the city center, spanning the Phetchaburi River. This bridge holds significance not just for its stunning architecture but also for its unique opening ceremony, where 9 elephants were brought to walk across it as part of the inaugural festivities. The elephants were tied to the bridge for three days and three nights, demonstrating its capacity to withstand such enormous weight. The locals have since fondly dubbed the bridge “Elephant Bridge.”

Mae Aon Khao Chae

The riverfront market’s delicious Khao Chae is made using a secret recipe passed down from Mae Orn’s grandmother. Mae Orn learned how to make Khao Chae as a child and has been selling it ever since. She follows her grandmother’s original recipe, which is painstaking in every detail.

Starting with the rice, the grains must be beautifully separated, not too hard or too mushy, and polished until clear and free of mucus before soaking in scented water mixed with candle smoke and jasmine, with floating ylang-ylang flowers to add a refreshing fragrance. Mae Orn’s offers three kinds of side dishes: sweet fried stingray, shrimp paste balls, and stir sried sweet preserved radish. All of these need talent and knowledge to create. The dishes are ideal for enjoying at the stall or purchasing as souvenirs.

For almost 60 years, the renowned Mae Dang Tod Mun shop in the riverside market has been sharing its cherished recipe from mother to daughter. The key to superb flavor lies in the carefully selected ingredients of pure Indian mackerel, with no flour to dilute the taste, complemented by the genuine Phetchaburi chili paste.

Fried to perfection, it offers a hot, firm, and chewy texture, bursting with the rich taste of curry paste, complemented by crispy fried basil leaves that boost the flavor experience. On top of that, it’s just 30 baht for a set! To truly enjoy the flavors of Phetchaburi, combine tod mun with khanom jeen, then drizzle with a sweet and sour sauce that has a hint of spice, and add cucumber and ground peanuts for a further punch of flavor. Missing this dish is like you haven’t truly experienced Phetchaburi.

The Phetchaburi River bridge in front of Wat Mahathat, known as Saphan Yai (The Big Bridge), has been in use for a long time. Originally built from wood, the bridge collapsed due to damage from fire and flooding. Previously, passenger boats were used to cross the river. However, the Phetchaburi Municipality built a new reinforced concrete bridge that allows automobiles to cross.

Begin your walking journey from Saphan Yai by looking for a bright red steel pole with the words “Phetchaburi Riverfront Market” and a WABU sign. Scan the QR code, then start your walking journey of over 400 meters to discover a vibrant collection of street art paintings.

Local artists created the paintings, which tell the story of the Chinese-Thai community, images captured during the flood, Khao Chae, the colorful market culture, “Nong Tanoad,” the Phetchaburi Province mascot, a royal painting of King Rama IX, and various cats for cat lovers to enjoy.

Travel Tip: Saphan Yai is a wonderful place to take photos with the majestic five-spire prang of Wat Mahathat as the backdrop.

Parking: Visitors can park their cars in Wat Mahathat’s parking lot.

MEJAI Jewelry Studio

A group of five young friends founded this interesting workshop to display the local expertise in Chanthaburi’s gem and jewelry craftsmanship, all while embracing a creative and contemporary lifestyle. It is the very first jewelry workshop studio in Chanthaburi Province. The studio is perfect for anyone passionate about creative works and wants to explore new experiences and exchange ideas with the local community.  Visitors can sign up for a workshop session to craft unique stone bracelets, resin jewelry, or rings for as little as 599 baht.

Rocket Ice Cream is proud to be Chanthaburi’s first machine-operated ice cream factory. The company has been operating since 1959. It presents an appealing selection of ice cream, featuring bars, scoops, and cuts, accompanied by a variety of flavors such as milk pop, black sticky rice, durian, and blue Hawaii, among others. ‘Glazed Tile Ice Cream,’ made from a delicious blend of milk and coconut milk and finished with a coating of Thai tea syrup, is truly a must-try. The factory maintains its original character with the tagline ‘delicious, clean, and hygienic.’ The factory building features a Western-style design, constructed with mixed wood and decorated with intricately carved wooden vents. This style is classified as Sino-Portuguese architecture, showcasing the historical trade links with Singapore.

Luang Rajamaitri Historic Inn

The historic house, standing proudly for a century, is the residence of Mr. Poom Punsri, also known as Luang Ratchamaitri. He began his journey as a merchant, following in the footsteps of his father, Luang Pramuan Ratchasap, who was both a tax collector and a merchant. Luang Ratchamaitri traveled to Penang under his father’s guidance to pursue his studies and went on to establish groundbreaking rubber plantations in Chanthaburi, ultimately achieving prosperity and earning the title of ‘Father of Eastern Rubber.’ The property has been transformed into a 10-room hotel, aiming to preserve heritage while engaging in sustainable business practices, under the management of Chanthaburi Rakdee Co., Ltd. Room rates start at just 1,690 baht.

Chaloem Chan Coffee Shop

A vintage coffee shop in Chanthaburi, known as the “Chaloem Chan Coffee Shop,” has been open for over 70 years due to its location near the former Chalerm Chan Cinema. The owner shared that calamansi is a key ingredient in the Vietnamese Chanthaburi cuisine.  Due to the abundance of produce, they decided to experiment with creating a beverage, ultimately becoming the pioneer in Chanthaburi with their unique calamansi juice recipe. The drinks have become incredibly popular all over the city. The shop’s best-selling menu item is the calamansi soda, which costs only 30 baht per glass.

Jang Guang An Medicine Shop

In the past, medicines were transported from China to Hong Kong, then to Bangkok, and ultimately to Chanthaburi. The first famous Chinese medicine shop in Chanthaburi has a history spanning over a century. Today, Jang Guang An Medicine Shop sells various Chinese and Thai herbs. The fourth-generation Hakka Chinese heir continues to manage the business in the same way as the generations before them. The shop largely maintains its charming character, showcasing equipment used for selling Chinese medicine, such as ancient medicine cabinets, medicine scales, brass mortars, and medicinal cutting knives, among other items. The ‘Shaking Inhaler’ is a popular tourist attraction, made by the shop owner right in front of you, letting you take home a freshly mixed bottle.

Punyashthiti Villa

Punyashthiti Villa is a handsome historical Chinese pavilion-style building that is between 120 and 150 years old. At first glance, it looks like a cozy single-story house, but step inside and you’ll be surprised to find a spacious three-story building, complete with a charming riverside house in the back. The house features a distinctive structure made of half concrete and half wood. The current owner of the house is the seventh-generation heir actively participating in the conservation and restoration initiative for the Chanthaburi riverside community. The owner used family funds for renovations and granted the right to Chanthaburi Rakdee Co., Ltd. to manage the space as a hotel. In total, there are five rooms. Starting prices are at 3,000 baht.

Visitors can explore the front zone of Bunyathiti Villa, which is open as an exhibition across all three floors at no cost. The first floor showcases the house’s restoration and is also the location of a charming riverside cafe named “Chong Dee by C.A.P.” The second floor covers the history of the Bunyathiti family, and the third floor highlights Chanthaburi Province. It acts as a vibrant hub for travelers, students, and any active learners.

Community Learning Center

A charming half-timbered residence, over a century old, has been generously made available by its owner, Pol. Col. Boonprim Patiruphanusorn, for the benefit of community activities. A workshop on the ground level invites visitors to create herbal-scented sachets, celebrating Chanthaburi’s rich history as a hub for spice trading and distribution. On the upper floor, an exhibition awaits visitors to the Chanthaburi riverfront village, offering insights into the community’s history, the identities of its inhabitants, their origins, and the significant architecture that defines the area. This learning center also made an effort to preserve the original architectural style, showcasing a blend of Thai, Chinese, and European influences.

Wat Bot Muang

The temple is located on Benchamarachuthit Road, near the Chanthaburi River, on top of a high hill that is exactly aligned with the previous city hall. The white sandstone sema stone, the ordination hall, and the Sri Lankan-style pagoda that houses the Buddha’s relics all point to a late Ayutthaya period construction. A lintel portraying Indra riding an Erawan elephant was discovered in a glass pavilion, demonstrating the essence of late Bapuan art. As you leave the temple, take in the beautiful backdrop of the Chanthaburi riverfront neighborhood, which includes a spectacular golden Sri Lankan-style pagoda tucked among quaint vintage houses. A short stroll to the Chanthanaram Temple Bridge will reward you with a view that is sure to bring you joy.

International Gems Market

Chanthaburi is known as the “City of Gems” for its many gem mines and skilled lapidaries. A renowned spot in the Chanthaburi Riverside Community is the International Gem Market, which locals commonly call the “Gem Market.” The area encompassing Soi Krachang and Srichan Road is recognized as a vital economic path in the province, featuring more than 120 shops specializing in lapidary, gems, and gold. Today, the lively scene of gem trading is unmistakable, with both Thai and foreign traders and buyers coming together, offering an exciting experience for tourists.

Niramol Bridge

In the past, the only way to cross the Chanthaburi River in front of the cathedral was through rowboats or hired boats. People used this mode of transportation to reach the temple to attend religious ceremonies, go to schools, visit friends and family, and participate in business activities. The first bridge linking both sides of the Chanthaburi River was built in 1975. In 2003, an unexpected disaster occurred as the bridge gave way while efforts were underway to clear the weeds. A new bridge called “Saphan Niramon” was built at the same spot and officially opened two years later. This bridge acts as a connection between the beliefs of the communities on both sides of the river and has turned into a popular destination for tourists today.

Jay Nong Noodle

A famous noodle shop in the Tha Ruea Chang Neighborhood, it has been serving customers for over 50 years. It has originally been praised for its pork and beef Liang noodles, a unique culinary tradition of the Chanthaburi people, known for its rich and aromatic herbal soup, which features bustard cardamom, a relative of ginger and turmeric, complemented by pineapple and pickled garlic, and roasted shrimp paste. It is incredibly rich and profoundly satisfying. Recently, the red pork noodles, known locally as “moo yeum,” have become quite the sensation. However, if you try both…they might just be the best.

Hours of operation: 08:30 to 14:30. Closed on Wednesday and Thursday.

Along the way    

As you journey from Je Nong’s to the Cathedral, be sure to look to your right. A sapodilla tree is nicely spreading its branches. During the season, you may come across  sapodilla fruits. You might be surprised to learn that this sapodilla tree is actually 300 years old! It can be said that it emerged alongside the community.

Over 40 stunning pieces of street art portray the vibrant story of Chanthaburi province, along with the Catholic Church and Ban Tha Ruea Chang neighborhoods. The focal piece highlights the intriguing history of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, showcasing its progression from the original wooden structure to the current fifth establishment, characterized by the impressive Western-style architecture. Additionally, the street art shows the well-known identity of Chanthaburi Province, various types of fruit, and the rabbit in the moon, which reflects the beauty, tranquility, and charm of this delightful region.

Sai Diew Grilled Banana

For over 20 years, the grilled banana from this shop has been a beloved snack in the Ban Tha Ruea Chang community. The shop uses a special selection of large, ripe bananas, grilling them to perfection and pounding them until they reach a delightful softness. A unique recipe is the sauce made from cane sugar, a celebrated specialty of Nong Bua Subdistrict, which is then simmered using traditional techniques. Each bite presents a wonderful flavor and aroma, beautifully combined with a touch of salted coconut milk.

Loong Tui Roman Grilled Pork and Beef

Despite its recent opening, Uncle Tui’s has quickly gained fame on social media, thanks to many food influencers who have shared their positive reviews. Uncle Tui’s grilled beef and pork boasts a unique taste that is hard to find elsewhere. His secret starts with selecting the perfect ingredients. Every type of meat ought to have a touch of fat. The pork should be sourced from the neck, while the beef should come from the sirloin tri-tip. Next, it is marinated and infused with herbs in the authentic Vietnamese style found in the Church neighborhood, featuring bustard cardamom, pepper, garlic, and cane sugar. The dish is baked to perfection and then grilled over charcoal to create the irresistible aroma.

Pipittha Kangkhen House

Father Chalerm Kitmongkol has been traveling through several countries since 1987, gathering a significant collection of crosses that represent God’s love and mercy for everyone, as well as rosaries and images of the Virgin Mary. The existing collection of more than 1,500 crosses is anticipated to be the most extensive in Thailand. The oldest one is over a century old. Included in the collection are unique pieces, such as a cross made from salt, hailing from the Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá, a church nestled within a salt mine in Colombia.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Built during the Ayutthaya period by Vietnamese escaping Christian persecution in Vietnam and moving to Chanthaburi, this cathedral, now in its fifth iteration, features a striking Gothic architectural style, highlighted by the spire on the bell tower. Inside, there are stunning stained glass depictions of saints and a hardwood Noah’s Ark-inspired ceiling design. The Virgin Mary, decorated with 200,000 gems and valued at over 10 million baht, stands out as the most captivating feature, crafted through the collaboration of the people of Chanthaburi. This Catholic church is celebrated as one of the oldest and most beautiful in Thailand, having been honored with the Outstanding Building Conservation Award in 1999 from the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage.

Hours of operation: Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 15:00, and on Sunday from 12:00 to 16:00.                       

Note: Please remember to dress appropriately; pants or skirts should cover the knees. Capturing images of individuals inside the cathedral is not allowed.

Pa Tai Egg Cake

The treat was originally called “Khanom Farang,” a name that illustrates its rich history. A French priest brought the recipe and techniques when he arrived with the first Vietnamese immigrants to Chanthaburi. Throughout the years, this culinary treasure was handed down through generations until it reached Aunt Tai. Only three simple ingredients are used in her recipe: eggs, flour, and sugar. Aunt Tai’s egg cake has been a beloved staple in the community for over 70 years, staying true to its original recipe and attracting customers with its pleasingl taste. What makes it unique is that it is freshly baked from the oven each day, featuring an egg cake without the trendy toppings that are popular today. Aunt Tai shared her wish for those who loved it as kids to come back and savor that same satisfying flavor once more.

อาคารครึ่งตึกครึ่งไม้ อายุกว่า 100 ปี ที่ พ.อ.หญิงบุญพริ้ม ปฏิรูปานุสร เจ้าของบ้าน ได้กรุณาให้ใช้ประโยชน์เพื่องานชุมชน ชั้นล่าง มีกิจกรรมเวิร์กช็อปทำถุงหอมสมุนไพรซึ่งล้อมาจากการเป็นแหล่งซื้อขายและกระจายเครื่องเทศที่สำคัญในอดีตของเมืองจันท์ ขณะที่ชั้นบน จัดแสดงนิทรรศการให้คนที่มาเที่ยวชุมชนริมน้ำจันทบูรได้รู้ว่า ชุมชนแห่งนี้มีประวัติความเป็นมาอย่างไร? คนที่อยู่ในชุมชนเป็นใครมาจากไหน? สถาปัตยกรรมที่โดดเด่นในชุมชนมีอาคารไหนบ้าง? มากไปกว่านั้น ศูนย์เรียนรู้แห่งนี้ยังพยายามอนุรักษ์รูปแบบอาคารดั้งเดิมที่มีการผสมผสานระหว่างแบบไทย จีน และยุโรป เอาไว้อย่างดีอีกด้วย

ร้านขายยาจีนที่มีชื่อเสียงร้านแรก ๆ ในเมืองจันทบุรี มีอายุกว่า 100 ปี โดยการขนส่งยาในสมัยนั้น จะขนส่งทางเรือจากเมืองจีน ผ่านฮ่องกง กรุงเทพฯ และลำเลียงเข้ามาที่จันทบุรี ปัจจุบันร้านขายยาจังกวงอัน จำหน่ายสมุนไพรจีนควบคู่กับสมุนไพรไทย มีทายาทรุ่นที่สี่ชาวจีนแคะเป็นผู้สืบทอดกิจการ สภาพร้านส่วนใหญ่ยังคงสภาพเหมือนในอดีต ทั้งเครื่องมือและเครื่องใช้ในการขายยาจีน เช่น ตู้ยาโบราณ เครื่องชั่งยา ครกตำยาทองเหลือง มีดหั่นยา ฯลฯ มีสินค้าขึ้นชื่อในหมู่นักท่องเที่ยวคือ ‘ยาดมเขย่า’ ที่เจ้าของร้านผสมให้ชมสด ๆ ให้พากลับบ้านกันแบบขวดต่อขวด

ร้านกาแฟโบราณคู่เมืองจันท์ ที่มีอายุยาวนานกว่า 70 ปี หรือที่คนพื้นที่เรียกว่า “ร้านกาแฟเฉลิมจันท์” เนื่องจากทำเลที่ตั้งอยู่ใกล้กับอดีตโรงหนังเฉลิมจันท์นั่นเอง ส่วนที่มาที่ไปของเมนูน้ำมะปี๊ดนั้น เจ้าของร้านเล่าว่า มะปี๊ด หรือส้มจี๊ดเป็นวัตถุดิบที่คนจันท์เชื้อสายญวนนิยมเอาไปทำอาหาร แต่ด้วยความที่มีผลผลิตเยอะเลยทดลองเอามาคั้นทำเป็นเครื่องดื่ม นับเป็นเจ้าแรกของเมืองจันท์จนได้รับความนิยมไปทั่วบ้านทั่วเมืองในปัจจุบัน โดยทีเด็ดของทางร้านอยู่ที่เมนูส้มจี๊ดโซดา ราคาแก้วละ 30 บาทเท่านั้น

บ้านโบราณอายุ 100 กว่าปี เป็นบ้านพักของนายปูม ปุณศรี หรือหลวงราชไมตรี ซึ่งเดิมเป็นพ่อค้าวาณิช ทำธุรกิจค้าขายสืบทอดจากคุณพ่อ หลวงประมวลราชทรัพย์ นายอากรเก็บส่วยและทำธุรกิจค้าขายด้วย หลวงราชไมตรีติดตามคุณพ่อไปเรียนหนังสือที่ปีนัง และมาบุกเบิกปลูกยางพาราที่จันทบุรีจนประสบความสำเร็จและได้รับการยกย่องให้เป็น ‘บิดาแห่งยางพาราภาคตะวันออก’ ปัจจุบันบ้านหลังนี้ได้รับการปรับปรุงให้เป็นโรงแรมที่พักขนาด 10 ห้อง ด้วยแนวคิดการอนุรักษ์สถาปัตยกรรมและทำธุรกิจเพื่อความยั่งยืนภายใต้การดูแลของบริษัท จันทบูรรักษ์ดี จำกัด โดยราคาห้องพักเริ่มต้นที่ 1,690 บาท

ตั้งอยู่บนเนินสูงระดับเดียวกับที่ตั้งศาลากลางหลังเก่าบนถนนเบญจมราชูทิศ ติดกับแม่น้ำจันทบุรี สันนิษฐานว่าสร้างขึ้นในสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลาย สังเกตได้จากใบเสมาหินทรายขาว พระอุโบสถ และเจดีย์ทรงลังกาบรรจุพระบรมธาตุ นอกจากนี้ ยังมีการค้นพบทับหลังรูปพระอินทร์ทรงช้างเอราวัณในซุ้มเรือนแก้วอันเป็นศิลปะบาปวนตอนปลายอีกด้วย เมื่อออกจากวัด หากอยากเห็นภาพของชุมชนริมน้ำจันทบูรที่มีเจดีย์ทรงลังกาสีทองอร่ามแวดล้อมด้วยอาคารบ้านเรือนแบบโบราณ แนะนำให้เดินต่อมาอีกนิดที่สะพานวัดจันทนารามก็จะได้เห็นภาพนั้นสมใจ

Pun Tao Kong-Pun Tao Ma Shrine

This shrine is believed to have been constructed by the Chinese ancestors two centuries ago. Over time, the shrine had deteriorated, and by 60 years ago, it left nearly no traces of its original structure. In 1972, the medium was possessed by Po Seian Chow Sue, who proclaimed that the spirits of the Lord and the Goddess once resided together in this ancient shrine. A committee was formed to engage and reach out to those of faith, inviting their support in both funding and effort for the construction of a new shrine until its completion. A ceremony took place to inaugurate the new shrine, where the Lord and Goddess were graciously invited to assume their rightful positions within it. A Chinese poem has been written for the occasion with the core message, “I have lived in this shrine with the goddess for years to safeguard against any threats to the people… establishing a place for future generations to witness and uphold their devotion forever.”

The riverside community is home to a historic shrine with a legacy that spans over a century. The devoted locals and committee members from past generations have renovated and enlarged it. Inside the shrine, three deities await worship and prayer: Seng Jui Zhou Sue Kong, known for providing healing from ailments; Eang Tian Siang Ti (Tua Lao Eia), the god of wealth, whom worshipers seek for enhanced charisma, prosperity, and good fortune; and Mae Ju Sae Niew Niew, who supports those in their quest for children. Pregnant women pray to the goddess for a healthy pregnancy and a seamless childbirth.

Kuan Yin Shrine and Tua Lao Eia Shrine

The Tua Lao Ya Shrine is situated on a hill along Sukhapiban Road, overlooking the Chanthaburi River. For many years, it has served as a sacred site for the Chinese-Thai community and residents of Chanthaburi Province. Within the shrine, one can find three deities: Tua Lao Ya, known as the Tiger God (God of Wealth); Hok Tek Lao Ya (Lord of the Land); and Chai Sing Lao Ya (God of Fortune). Each year, the shrine organizes a procession featuring the three deities parading through the streets, bestowing fortune and blessings upon the people of Chanthaburi, all while being accompanied by the lively Golden Dragon Group. Nearby stands another historic shrine, the Guan Yin Bodhisattva shrine, a popular destination for locals who come to seek blessings in love, children, and career.

จันทบุรีเป็นที่รู้จักกันดีว่าเป็น ‘เมืองแห่งอัญมณี’ (City of Gems) เนื่องจากเป็นที่ตั้งของบ่อพลอย เหมืองพลอย รวมถึงมีช่างเจียระไนฝีมือดีอยู่เป็นจำนวนมาก โดยบริเวณชุมชนริมน้ำจันทบูรเป็นอีกหนึ่งที่ตั้งของสถานที่สำคัญอย่างตลาดกลางพลอยนานาชาติ หรือที่ชาวบ้านเรียกกันสั้น ๆ ว่า “ตลาดพลอย” ซึ่งบริเวณซอยกระจ่างและถนนศรีจันท์ นับเป็นถนนเศรษฐกิจที่สำคัญของจังหวัด เพราะเป็นที่ตั้งของร้านเจียระไนพลอย ร้านค้าอัญมณี ร้านทองรูปพรรณ มากกว่า 120 ร้าน ทุกวันนี้เรายังสามารถเห็นบรรยากาศการซื้อขายพลอยอันคึกคักที่มีผู้ค้าและผู้รับซื้อทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างชาติ และเป็นประสบการณ์ที่น่าตื่นตาตื่นใจสำหรับนักท่องเที่ยว

นับตั้งแต่ปี 2530 เมื่อบาทหลวงเฉลิม กิจมงคล มีโอกาสได้เดินทางไปยังต่างประเทศในหลาย ๆ ประเทศ จึงได้เก็บรวบรวมและสะสมไม้กางเขน สัญลักษณ์แทนความรักและความเมตตาของพระเจ้าที่ทรงมีต่อมนุษย์ทุกคน ทั้งขนาดเล็ก ใหญ่ รวมถึงลูกประคำและรูปเคารพของพระแม่มารี จนปัจจุบันมีมากกว่า 1,500 อัน ซึ่งคาดว่าน่าจะมากที่สุดในประเทศไทย โดยอันที่เก่าแก่ที่สุด มีอายุกว่า 100 ปี ส่วนอันที่แปลก ๆ ก็มีให้เห็น อย่างกางเขนทำจากเกลือที่นำมาจาก Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá โบสถ์ในเหมืองเกลือ ประเทศโคลอมเบีย เป็นต้น

แม้เพิ่งเปิดได้ไม่นาน แต่ตอนนี้ลุงตุ๋ยกำลังดังไกลในโลกโซเชียล หลังมีอินฟลูฯ สายกินมารีวิวกันนับไม่ถ้วน ที่เป็นอย่างนั้น เพราะรสแบบนี้ใช่ว่าจะหากินได้ทั่วไป โดยเคล็ดลับของลุงตุ๋ยเริ่มที่การคัดเลือกวัตถุดิบ ที่เนื้อแต่ละชนิดต้องติดมันมาด้วยเล็กน้อย เนื้อหมูต้องเป็นส่วนสันคอ เนื้อวัวต้องตรงหางตะเข้ หลังจากนั้นจึงนำไปหมักไปคลุกด้วยเครื่องสมุนไพรตามแบบฉบับคนญวนหลังวัดคาทอลิก ที่ประกอบด้วยข่า พริกไทย กระเทียม และน้ำตาลอ้อย แล้วจึงนำไปอบให้สุก ก่อนนำมาย่างอีกครั้งด้วยเตาถ่านให้ได้กลิ่นหอม รักษาไฟด้วยขี้เถ้า หมุนไปมาให้สุกโดยทั่ว

ร้านขายกล้วยปิ้งประจำชุมชนบ้านท่าเรือจ้าง เป็นของกินเล่นขึ้นชื่อของชุมชน ขายมากว่า 20 ปี โดดเด่นด้วยการเลือกกล้วยน้ำว้าลูกโต ๆ สุกพอดีกิน นำไปย่างอุ่น ๆ ทุบให้นุ่ม ส่วนที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์อีกอย่างคือ น้ำราดที่ทำจากน้ำตาลอ้อยเคี่ยวแบบโบราณ ของดีของเด่น ต.หนองบัว ให้รสหวานและกลิ่นหอม ผสมกับน้ำกะทิที่ออกเค็มนิด ๆ เวลากิน ป้าตุ้มบอกให้จิ้มชิ้นก้น ๆ ถุง จะได้ “เซิ่บ ๆ” หรือภาษากลางก็คือ “ชุ่ม ๆ” นั่นเอง

ก๋วยเตี๋ยวเจ๊น้อง

ก๋วยเตี๋ยวร้านดังของชุมชนท่าเรือจ้าง ขายมานานกว่า 50 ปี แต่ก่อนขึ้นชื่อเรื่องก๋วยเตี๋ยวหมูเลียง เนื้อเลียง อีกหนึ่งรากรสชาติพันธุ์ของคนเมืองจันท์ที่โดดเด่นด้วยน้ำซุปสมุนไพรรสกลมกล่อม มีเร่ว (พืชวงศ์เดียวกับขิง ข่า) สับปะรด กระเทียมดอง และกะปิเผาเป็นส่วนผสมสำคัญ เข้มข้นถึงใจ แต่หลัง ๆ มานี้ ก๋วยเตี๋ยวหมูแดงที่คนในละแวกเรียกกันว่า “หมูเยิ้ม” กลับมาแรงแซงทางโค้ง แต่ถ้าได้ชิมทั้งสองชาม…อาจเป็นดีที่สุด        

Along the way ระหว่างร้านก๋วยเตี๋ยวเจ๊น้องกลับไปยังอาสนวิหารพระนางมารีอาปฏิสนธินิรมล อย่าลืมสังเกตทางขวามือ จะเห็นต้นละมุดแผ่กิ่งก้านสาขา หรือถ้าไปตรงฤดูอาจได้เห็นผลละมุดด้วย ซึ่งถ้าไม่มีใครบอก อาจไม่รู้ว่า ต้นละมุดต้นนี้มีอายุเก่าแก่ถึง 300 ปี! เรียกได้ว่า เกิดมาพร้อมกับชุมชนเลยทีเดียว

สะพานนิรมล

การเดินทางข้ามฟากแม่น้ำจันทบุรีบริเวณหน้าวัดคาทอลิกในอดีต มีทางเดียวคือ เรือแจว เรือจ้าง ทั้งการไปวัดเพื่อประกอบพิธีกรรมทางศาสนา ไปโรงเรียน การเดินทางไปมาหาสู่กันและค้าขายต่าง ๆ จวบจนปี 2518 จึงมีการสร้างสะพานเชื่อมสองฝั่งแม่น้ำจันทบุรีขึ้นครั้งแรก แต่แล้วก็เกิดเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่คาดฝันขึ้นในปี 2546 เมื่อสะพานเกิดหักขณะดึงกอสวะออก ต่อมามีการสร้างสะพานใหม่ ณ จุดเดิม ชื่อว่า “สะพานนิรมล” เปิดใช้ในอีกสองปีถัดมา นับเป็นสะพานเชื่อมศรัทธาชุมชนสองฝั่งน้ำและเป็นจุดเช็กอินยอดนิยมของนักท่องเที่ยวในปัจจุบัน

อาสนวิหารพระนางมารีอาปฏิสนธินิรมล

สร้างขึ้นในสมัยอยุธยาโดยชาวญวนที่หนีการเบียดเบียนคริสต์ศาสนิกชนในเวียดนามมาอยู่ที่จันทบุรี อาสนวิหารแห่งนี้ซึ่งเป็นโบสถ์หลังที่ 5 นับตั้งแต่มีการก่อสร้างครั้งแรก มีรูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมแบบกอทิก สังเกตได้จากยอดแหลมบนหอระฆัง ภายในมีภาพนักบุญประดับกระจกสีแบบสเตนกลาส ตกแต่งเพดานเป็นท้องเรือไม้โนอาห์ ส่วนไฮไลต์ที่น่าสนใจอีกอย่างคือ องค์พระแม่มารีประดับพลอย 2 แสนเม็ด มูลค่ากว่า 10 ล้านบาท อันเกิดจากความร่วมใจของชาวเมืองจันทบุรี โดยโบสถ์คาทอลิกแห่งนี้ได้ชื่อว่าเก่าแก่และสวยงามที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งของประเทศไทย ทั้งยังได้รับรางวัลอนุรักษ์อาคารดีเด่น ประจำปี 2542 จากสมาคมสถาปนิกสยามในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์อีกด้วย                                          

ด้านหลังโบสถ์เป็นที่ตั้งของ ‘ตลาดร้อยปี’ ตลาดเช้าของชุมชน เปิดให้บริการทุกวัน ตั้งแต่ 05:00-09:00 น. ซึ่งในบริเวณเดียวกันยังมีภาพวาดสตรีทอาร์ตเล่าเรื่องราวของชุมชนชาวคาทอลิกเชื้อสายญวน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นภาพพระเยซูในวัยเยาว์ ภาพพระเยซูตรึงกางเขน ภาพนักบุญ หรือแม้แต่ภาพของคนในชุดอ๋าวหญ่าย ชุดประจำชาติเวียดนาม
